Men’s mental health remains a critical issue across the UK, and according to the Office of National Statistics men account for 75 per cent of all suicides and suicide standing as the biggest killer of men aged 35–50. Despite these alarming statistics, men are significantly less likely to ask for support—making the battle against mental health challenges feel even more daunting.

Mike, a Freemason from North Wales, knows this struggle first-hand. After navigating a particularly difficult period in his life, he accessed mental health support through the Freemasons’ Charity—a turning point that helped him rebuild his wellbeing.

Reflecting on the support he received, Mike describes it as exactly what he needed at the right time. “It was efficient, with the right people guiding me when I needed it most,” he shared, adding that the intervention brought him to a far better place.

Having experienced the power of getting help, Mike is passionate about breaking the silence surrounding men’s mental health. He strongly encourages anyone going through a tough time to get in touch, emphasising that reluctance to ask for help only prevents men from accessing the life-changing support available to them.

Now, Mike is giving back. This September, he is taking on the iconic Great North Run to raise funds as part of the North Wales 2028 Festival. As an experienced long-distance runner, Mike is pushing his limits to shave time off his personal best while raising money for a cause close to his heart.

Taking part in the Great North Run is not only a personal challenge for me, but also an opportunity to contribute towards a charity whose compassion, generosity, and community spirit have such a meaningful impact,” says Mike. “Every donation helps the Freemasons’ Charity continue its incredible work and ensures support is available to those who need it most.
