Behind the Apron: Inside the Order of Women Freemasons
While it remains a little-known fact to many, women play an active role in Freemasonry. In fact, the oldest order in the UK is the Order of Women Freemasons (OWF). Operating along the same traditional lines as their male counterparts, members of the OWF share a strong commitment to charitable work and we are incredibly proud to be one of the causes they support.
We recently spoke with Worshipful Master Kim Davis to find out what inspires the Order’s generosity and to gain a unique insight into the world of women’s Freemasonry.
Kim’s connection to the Freemasons’ Charity is deeply personal. In 2001, following the breakdown of her marriage, Kim found herself working part-time and struggling to make ends meet as a single mother to her son, Jack. Recognising her hardship, Kim’s stepfather, a Freemason himself, connected her to the charity through his lodge Almoner.
The support that followed was life changing. By stepping in to ease the financial burden at a time of crisis, we were able to ensure Jack didn’t miss out on vital educational and social opportunities, funding school trips and extra-curricular activities.
When Jack was diagnosed with dyslexia at 16 years old, the charity stepped in again, funding a laptop equipped with specialist software to support him through his A-Levels. This vital support extended right through his university years, helping him successfully graduate.
Today, things have come full circle. When asked how Jack is getting on, Kim proudly shared that he is now working in a role dedicated to supporting students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
Driven by a desire to pay it forward, Kim always knew she wanted to return the favour.
When I joined the Order of Women Freemasons in 2017, I promised myself that if I ever became Worshipful Master, my nominated charity would be the Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys,” Kim explains. “I wanted to put money back into the funds to help other families who find themselves in the same position I was in. I know the Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys has since amalgamated with other charities to become the Freemasons’ Charity, but my sentiment remains exactly the same.
True to her word, Kim has spearheaded a variety of fundraising events, with a generous portion of the proceeds coming directly to the charity that supported her family. Her standout event so far has been a spectacular Gentlemen’s Ball hosted at a local hotel. Attended by 92 guests, the evening was a resounding success. Reflecting on the achievement, Kim emphasises that teamwork is the secret to any successful fundraiser.
Kim also offered a glimpse into what life is like within the Order of Women Freemasons, describing a close-knit community built on shared rituals, mutual support, and a collective passion for charitable giving nationwide.
